Background

The Fv653 under the Eiksundsundet in Møre og Romsdal connects the island of Eika and Hareidlandet to the mainland. When it opened on 23 February 2008, it was the deepest road tunnel in the world, 287 metres below sea level.

The Eiksund link replaced the Eiksund to Riksheim ferry. For the people of Hareidlandet it meant a ferry-free road to Ulsteinvik and on towards Ålesund, around the clock.

The tunnel drew criticism over fire safety after a serious fire in 2009, and has since been upgraded. Convoy driving is still used during major rockfalls, so check the status before you drive.
