The E16 between Lærdal and Aurland in Vestland runs 24.5 kilometres through the mountain. This is the longest road tunnel in the world, and the drive takes about 20 minutes.

The tunnel opened in November 2000 and gave Lærdal a ferry-free road across to Aurland and on towards Bergen. Sogn had long been one of the most ferry-dependent parts of the country, and the tunnel was the last major link in the E16 between Oslo and Bergen.

So that nobody loses their bearings during 20 minutes in the dark, the tunnel was built with three large rock caverns. They are lit in blue light, with wide zones where you can stop. The first trial boring was taken in 1975, but it took 25 years before the tunnel stood finished.
